Description
Vintage Postcard
White border era, circa 1920s
"Above the Land of the Sky" - The ALTAPASS INN
Built on the crest of the Blue Ridge mountains, along the Carolina, Clinchfield & Ohio Railroad in the late 19th century, the Altapass Inn sat among some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the USA.
Open all year round, guests enjoyed nature trails, picking fruit in the orchards, swimming, playing sports and games, and taking spa treatments.
There is no town of Altapass in North Carolina. The moniker "Altapass" came from the railroad itself, 'alta' meaning high and 'pass' referring to nearby McKinney Gap.
Eventually automobile travel took the place of train travel for many, and a new Parkway was built many miles away, making the train trip no longer convenient or expedient.
Once the CCO railroad ceased passenger service into the area, the community dissolved.
