Description
Vintage view postcard
Linen era, circa 1950's
Colorized version of an older photo
Landmark Gate in Chichicastenango, Guatemala
The munipality of Chichicastenango lies on the crests of mountaintops at an altitude of 6,447 ft (1,965 m), and approximately 87 miles (140 km) north and west of Guatemala City. Spanish conquistadors gave the town its name based on a Nahuatl name used by their soldiers: Tzitzicaztenanco, meaning City of Nettles.
Chichicastenango is composed of the municipal seat and 81 rural communities, dominated by the K'iche people and language. 98% of the municipality's population is indigenous Mayan K'iche. 92% of the municipality's population speaks the K'iche language, with the remaining 8% being monolingual Spanish speakers.
