Vintage illustration by Archibald Gunn of a lovely dark-haired woman
with seductive gaze holding a flower under her chin.
About the artist - Archie Gunn
Archibald, better known as Archie, began studying art in London with his father who was a painter and member of the Royal Academy. Gunn began his career as a costume designer and a portrait painter, creating theatrical posters and advertising art. In 1889 he moved to New York City primarily providing illustrations for magazines and newspapers. Gunn's work also appeared on calendars and chocolate boxes.
Gunn also designed a good number of postcards for the National Art Co. on West 23rd St. in Manhattan, mainly depicting women. In addition to prints of his work they published view-cards, animal, greeting, and holiday postcards, many of which were artist signed. National folded in 1930 but Archie Gunn was one of their more notable artists.
