Description
Antique postcard
Linen era, circa 1939
Long Beach, CA
View of the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium from the beach. In 1932 this 8,000-seat Municipal Auditorium, surrounded on three sides by a lagoon, was constructed on the beach. To protect the building from coastal erosion and storms, a horseshoe-shaped breakwater was constructed around it.
The half-circular Rainbow Pier, arching from Linden Avenue to Pine Avenue, surrounded the auditorium and the lagoon.
Light poles on the horseshoe pier were painted in a variety of colors, making it a colorful, cheerful place for walking or driving.
Like architecture? Or beaches in general?
Take a second to view its immensity - www.kcet.org/shows/lost-la/pho…;
3,800 feet of colorful horseshoe (rainbow) shaped pier, big enough to walk on and drive on.
Also the lagoon inside of it had little boats you could hire and take out.
In the late 40's because of sand filtering in through the rocks making the bay unusable, the city filled in the lagoon to create more land.
The Municipal Auditorium was demolished in 1975 to make way for the The Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center.
