Bathers enjoying the beach in front of Atlantic City's historic Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel.
At the time of its construction in 1902, Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel the largest reinforced concrete building in the world. The hotel’s Spanish and Moorish themes, capped off with its signature dome and chimneys, represented a step forward from other hotels that had a classically designed influence.
"Blenheim" refers to Blenheim Palace in England, the ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill, a grandson of the Duke of Marlborough.
In 1916, Winston Churchill was a guest of the hotel.
The hotel features prominently in the 1972 Bob Rafelson film The King of Marvin Gardens, starring Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern and Ellen Burstyn.
In the Garry Marshall film Beaches, Hillary Whitney stays with her family at a fictionalized version of the hotel, where she treats C. C. Bloom to chocolate sodas in the Garden Court.
In the HBO television series Boardwalk Empire, Nucky Thompson lives on the 8th floor of a hotel whose architecture is based on the Marlborough-Blenheim's. The Blenheim hotel is mentioned throughout the series.
The hotel was demolished in the 1970's to make way for Bally's Casino Hotel. A clip of the demolition of the main dome of the hotel is featured in the music video for Bruce Springsteen's song "Atlantic City."

I use to live in Atlantic City. I am surprised that the city had a hay day. No matter, the ocean, good people, diversity, and the food make up for everything NJ and that city is lacking in.
