Description
Vintage postcard
Circa 1930's
Biltmore Estate as viewed from the gardens, Asheville N.C.
George W. Vanderbilt decided, at the age of 26, he wanted a vacation home in the North Carolina Mountains.
With 4 acres of floor space - including 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces, the Biltmore House is the largest private home in America.
Vanderbilt was a seasoned traveler. In order to find inspiration for his magnificent home away from home, he ventured to Europe. The Biltmore Estate is modeled from a French Chateau and 16th.-century castles in the Loire Valley of France.
Aside from being the most popular destination in North Carolina, it's also home to the most visited winery in the U.S. and one of the finest estate gardens in the country. Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed New York's Central Park, also designed the lavish 8,000-acre gardens and grounds of Biltmore Estate.
The estate has been passed down through the family and eventually became open to the public, over 250 weddings are held here each year.
