Plum Blossoms.  The Japanese have a particular reference for the blossom of the plum; their holiday-makings to view this favourite amongst their flowers is not attended with the merry, noisy behaviour as when the cherry is in bloom.  Often whole groups will sit silently in quiet contemplation, and the drinking of endless cups of tea and tiny cups of sake does not rouse them to outward demonstrations of delight. In old days the plum tree was representative of their ideal of purity.
